Some Observations on the Law and the Nature of the Judicial Process

    Get PDF
My purpose in mentioning some of these developments is to point out and to emphasize that the most constructive changes have occurred (1) in the field of procedural law, and (2) in judicial administration. The latter term of course largely refers to methods or mechanics for expediting and handling the business of the courts. The one significant area wherein we have lagged the most is in the field of substantive law evaluation, revision, and improvement

Optically Probing Spin and Charge Interactions in an Tunable Artificial Molecule

    Get PDF
We optically probe and electrically control a single artificial molecule containing a well defined number of electrons. Charge and spin dependent inter-dot quantum couplings are probed optically by adding a single electron-hole pair and detecting the emission from negatively charged exciton states. Coulomb and Pauli blockade effects are directly observed and hybridization and electrostatic charging energies are independently measured. The inter-dot quantum coupling is confirmed to be mediated predominantly by electron tunneling. Our results are in excellent accord with calculations that provide a complete picture of negative excitons and few electron states in quantum dot molecules.Comment: shortened version: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, to appear in Phys. Twisting type-N vacuum fields with a group H2H_2

We derive the equations corresponding to twisting type-N vacuum gravitational fields with one Killing vector and one homothetic Killing vector by using the same approach as that developed by one of us in order to treat the case with two non-commuting Killing vectors. We study the case when the homothetic parameter ϕ\phi takes the value -1, which is shown to admit a reduction to a third-order real ordinary differential equation for this problem, similar to that previously obtained by one of us when two Killing vectors are present.Comment: LaTeX, 11 pages. The Robinson-Trautman Type III Prolongation Structure Contains K2_2

The minimal prolongation structure for the Robinson-Trautman equations of Petrov type III is shown to always include the infinite-dimensional, contragredient algebra, K2_2, which is of infinite growth. Knowledge of faithful representations of this algebra would allow the determination of B\"acklund transformations to evolve new solutions.Comment: 20 pages, plain TeX, no figures, submitted to Commun. X-Ray Spectral Variability of Extreme BL Lac AGN H1426+428

    Get PDF
Between 7 March 2002 and 15 June 2002, intensive X-ray observations were carried out on the extreme BL Lac object H1426+428 with instruments on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). These instruments provide measurements of H1426+428 in the crucial energy range that characterizes the first peak of its spectral energy distribution. This peak, which is almost certainly due to synchrotron emission, has previously been inferred to be in excess of 100 keV. By taking frequent observations over a four-month campaign, which included \sim450 ksec of RXTE time, studies of flux and spectral variability on multiple timescales were performed, along with studies of spectral hysteresis. The 3-24 keV X-ray flux and spectra exhibited significant variability, implying variability in the location of the first peak of the spectral energy distribution. Hysteresis patterns were observed, and their characteristics have been discussed within the context of emission models.Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa
